Company Profile - Refractron Technologies Corp.

Products & Applications:

RefractronRefractron Technologies Corp. is a leading manufacturer of technical ceramics. Products include both controlled porosity and densely structured ceramics designed to meet requirements specified by our customers for durability, chemical, corrosion and wear resistance, toughness, and density.

The range of dense structural ceramics using proprietary zirconia ceramics includes custom blended ceramic alloy powders formed by isopressing or extrusion to meet customer specifications. Refractron's zirconia is offered in two materials Magnesia Partially Stabilized Zirconia, Mg-PSZ and Yttria Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal, Y-TZP. Refractron's structural ceramic zirconia materials provide excellent erosion, corrosion and abrasion resistance along with temperature resistance, fracture toughness and strength. Numerous applications for these materials are in the chemical and petrochemical industry providing economic payback in the way of reduced maintenance and down time. Zirconia is also becoming the material of choice for components in healthcare and dental applications. The types of dense, structural ceramic components produced by Refractron include: valve components, pump liners, plugs, sleeves, pistons, precision ceramic balls, spools, press tooling, dental blanks, extrusion tooling and wear plates.

The range of Refractron porous ceramics include monolithic and membrane components made from aluminum oxide and silicon carbide. The strong, uniform porous ceramic has 40-50% open porosity with a tortuous pore structure and is available in pore sizes ranging from 0.25 to 90 microns. The types of porous ceramic products include membrane and monolithic tubes, discs, plates and other components where tightly controlled pore size and porosity is critical. Filtration is a common application where porous ceramic is used for catalyst recovery, hot gas, liquid backwash, solvent filtration, coalescing and solids recovery in chemical process, water and mining industries. Diffusion or sparging using porous ceramics to produce fine bubbles is another typical application as high gas transfer efficiencies are be achieved with the uniform pore structure. Other specialty porous ceramic products include a range of adsorbent filter/drier cores for refrigeration applications, wicking & dispersion parts, vacuum chucks, inkpads and gas probes.

History:

Refractron Technologies Corp., a privately held company, was founded in 1984 with the acquisition of the plant, equipment and technology at the present location. The business was originally based on porous ceramic technology purchased from The Carborundum Co. and the active filter drier technology of Tetron Inc. In 2002 Refractron acquired Xylon Ceramic Materials, Inc. of Alfred, NY and Advanced Ceramics Inc. of Painted Post, NY relocating both to the main plant in Newark to manufacture the range of structural ceramic products and precision grinding and machining.
